Buying Clubs, CSA's, Farmers' Markets, U Picks

Buying Clubs

Buying clubs partner with area farmers and producers so they can market directly to club members. The club staff handles all orders and payments and collects items from area farms which are delivered  to designated locations.

 

Three Sisters Buying Club- Selinsgrove

Area farms provide organic milk, pastured eggs, artisan breads, meats, cheeses, salsas and herbal soaps  year-round. Items such as honey, maple syrup, fruits, vegetables and other seasonal products are offered as they become available.

 

Community Supported Agriculture CSA's

Would you like to buy food raised in your area on a small farm? Consider joining a CSA. Members pay upfront, usually by April, for crops to be raised throughout the growing season. Generally, weekly shares of produce are distributed  from mid May to October. Some CSA's offer food into Dec. Check with the specific CSA to find out such details as what produce they are growing, when to expect the produce, various share plans they offer. Susquehanna University CSA  - Selinsgrove

2010 is the first full year of the campus CSA which was founded by Dr. Alissa Packer, associate professor of biology, and Carla Hine, campus garden manager. During last year's trial run excess produce was sold to the university's dining service and served in the Everett Dining Hall. Over 50 different types of vegetables are expected to be harvested between mid May and October. The garden will also be available for student research and observation. Schlegel Fruit Farm - use of pheromones has decreased their use of pesticides on fruit trees by 80%. Also sells PA maple syrup and jams.

 

Susquehanna Valley Growers' Market - Hufnagle Park, between 5th & 6th Streets on Market St.  mid May - Oct. Fridays 12 - 5 pm. Some organic food stands.
